Free piston engine or free piston linear generator?

Free piston engines are coming back, from car manufacturers. The invention is very old but electric cars need electricity, and the free piston engine is a very light and compact to charge an electric car when the charging station is not near.

A team at Toyota Central R&D Labs Inc. is developing a prototype 10 kW Free Piston Engine Linear Generator (FPEG) featuring a thin and compact build, high efficiency and high fuel flexibility.
